Currently the nation’s largest progressive design-build water plant project, the City of Houston’s Northeast Water Purification Plant (NEWPP) expansion project consists of two design-build phases to expand the plant’s capacity from 80 million gallons per day (MGD) to 400 MGD by 2024. The expansion project, valued at $1.8 billion, will help the City and water authorities meet water demands, and fulfill requirements by the Harris-Galveston and Fort Bend Subsidence Districts that restrict groundwater usage. The four partner agencies involved in the project include: North Harris County Regional Water Authority, Central Harris County Regional Water Authority, West Harris County Regional Water Authority and North Fort Bend Water Authority.
Five Companies was selected to complete the yard piping construction for the NEWPP. Under this contract, Five Companies worked with PLW Waterworks to install 121,000 LF of water line, including large diameter water lines from 84” to 120”. Sequencing of Five Companies’ work was crucial to ensure the program remained on schedule; the firm finished Phase I Yard Piping in 2020 and Phase 2 in 2022.
